Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Thursday said he has reiterated directions for carrying out genome sequencing of positive cases so that cases of JN.1 variant can be confirmed. Talking to PTI Video, he said the government has ramped up Covid testing, with 636 tests conducted on Wednesday.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj emphasized the critical need for enhanced genome sequencing of COVID-19 positive cases to identify instances of the newly discovered JN.1 variant. Speaking with PTI Video, Bharadwaj underscored the government's intensified efforts in COVID testing, revealing that 636 tests were conducted on Wednesday alone.
Just a day prior, Bharadwaj had confirmed Delhi's first case of the JN.1 variant, prompting immediate action.
"I have reiterated the directive for genome sequencing of all positive cases to accurately identify new variants. Yesterday, we confirmed three variants, including two older Omicron variants and the new JN.1 variant. Fortunately, the patient diagnosed with the JN.1 variant, a 52-year-old woman who was hospitalized, has been discharged," Bharadwaj informed PTI Video.
Describing the patient's condition, he reassured, "She did not experience severe symptoms." Currently, four patients remain hospitalized under observation, as per the minister's update. Bharadwaj urged individuals experiencing prolonged illness to refrain from crowded places as a precautionary measure.
In addition to these measures, Bharadwaj disclosed that instructions have been issued to launch awareness campaigns at bus stops and other public areas to educate citizens about preventive measures against COVID-19 and the importance of prompt testing.
The emergence of the JN.1 variant underscores the ongoing challenges posed by COVID-19 and the necessity for vigilant monitoring and public health interventions. Bharadwaj's proactive stance on genome sequencing aims to swiftly identify and contain the spread of new variants, thereby safeguarding public health.
As Delhi continues its efforts to combat COVID-19, including ramping up testing and enhancing surveillance, Bharadwaj's leadership underscores the importance of data-driven decision-making and community awareness in managing the pandemic effectively.
Moving forward, sustained cooperation between health authorities, medical professionals, and the public will be crucial in navigating the evolving landscape of COVID-19 variants and ensuring the well-being of all residents in Delhi and beyond.
