Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the robotic surgery unit, hipec (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) treatment facility, patient welfare and service block and clinical laboratory tracking system on January 15 in a function to be presided over by health minister Veena George. MLA Kadakampally Surendran and corporation mayor Arya Rajendran will be special guests during the occasion.


The landscape of cancer treatment in Kerala is set to undergo a revolutionary transformation with the introduction of advanced robotic surgery and cutting-edge medical facilities. Scheduled for inauguration on January 15, this ambitious initiative spearheaded by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Health Minister Veena George aims to bring state-of-the-art healthcare closer to the people.

Robotic surgery, a sophisticated form of minimal access surgery utilizing surgical robots, will soon be available at both the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) and the Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC). Currently limited to larger hospitals both within the country and abroad, this technology promises significant benefits including reduced bleeding, minimal pain, and accelerated recovery times for patients undergoing various cancer treatments.

Minister Veena George highlighted the government's commitment to enhancing diagnostic and treatment capabilities by allocating substantial funds through the Rebuild Kerala Initiative. An investment of Rs 60 crore for RCC and MCC, along with Rs 18.87 crore for digital pathology centers, underscores the state's dedication to providing modern healthcare solutions accessible to all citizens.

"At present, robotic surgery for cancer treatment is available only in large-scale hospitals in the nation and in foreign countries," noted Minister Veena George. "With this initiative, robotic surgery will soon become a reality at MCC as well, marking a significant step towards ensuring advanced care reaches every corner of the state."

In addition to robotic surgery, the introduction of the Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (Hipec) treatment facility at RCC further enhances Kerala's medical prowess. Costing Rs 1.32 crore, Hipec allows for targeted chemotherapy delivery directly to cancerous areas during surgery, optimizing treatment efficacy while minimizing systemic side effects.

The newly established patient welfare and service block exemplifies the government's patient-centric approach, aiming to provide comprehensive support and comfort to those undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, the state-of-the-art clinical laboratory tracking system, which has automated testing capabilities and enables real-time monitoring, ensures efficiency and accuracy in diagnostic processes.
